How to remove malware from a Windows PC

Updated November 2026 · All guides

If your PC is slow, shows constant pop-ups or redirects your browser, work through these steps calmly.

1. Disconnect and back up

Disconnect from the internet if you suspect active malware, and copy important files to an external drive.

2. Run a full scan

Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. The PC restarts and scans before Windows loads.

3. Use a second-opinion scanner

A reputable on-demand scanner from a known vendor can catch what the first missed.

4. Remove unknown programs and extensions

Go to Settings > Apps and uninstall anything you don't recognise. Then review browser extensions and remove unknown ones.

5. Reset browser notifications

Revoke notification permission for suspicious sites in your browser settings.

6. Change passwords

From a clean device, change important passwords and enable two-factor authentication.

7. If it persists

Consider a Windows reset or ask a qualified local technician. Back up first.
