Antivirus guide
Antivirus (or anti-malware) software scans files and watches running programs for known threats and suspicious behaviour. Modern suites also add web filtering, ransomware protection, a firewall and extras like a VPN or password manager.

Features that matter most
- Real-time protection: blocks threats as they appear, not only during scheduled scans.
- Web and phishing protection: warns about dangerous or fake sites.
- Ransomware protection: guards important folders from unauthorised encryption.
- Low performance impact: scans should not make your PC crawl.
- Clear updates and support: automatic definition updates and real contact options.
Extras that are nice but optional
VPNs, password managers, identity monitoring and cloud backup are useful, but you can also get each separately. Pay for them only if you will use them.
Is Microsoft Defender enough?
For many home users, the Windows Security built into Windows 10 and 11 gives solid baseline protection at no cost. Paid suites make sense if you want extras such as multi-device coverage, parental controls or identity monitoring. Whatever you pick, run one real-time antivirus at a time; stacking two can cause conflicts.
What antivirus cannot do
No product catches everything. Software updates, backups, strong unique passwords, and cautious clicking matter just as much. See our security checklist.
