How to choose an antivirus for Windows
Updated November 2026 · All guides
Start with what you actually need. A single Windows laptop used for browsing and email has different needs from a family with phones, tablets and a shared PC.
Step 1: Check what you already have
Open Windows Security from the Start menu. If virus and threat protection shows as active, you already have baseline protection.
Step 2: List the extras you want
Parental controls, a VPN, identity monitoring or backup? Match them against the comparison table.
Step 3: Check independent tests
Look at recent AV-Test or AV-Comparatives results for detection and performance.
Step 4: Read renewal terms
Many first-year prices rise at renewal. Check the renewal price and cancellation process before you pay.
Step 5: Buy from the official source
Go directly to the vendor or a well-known retailer. Never buy because of a pop-up.
