Spotting fake virus alerts and tech support scams
Updated November 2026 · All guides
Websites cannot scan your computer from a browser tab. Any page claiming it found viruses is trying to scare you.
Common signs
- Full-screen warnings with countdown timers or loud alarms.
- A phone number telling you to call 'support'.
- Logos of famous brands on a page you did not choose to visit.
- Requests to allow notifications or install software immediately.
What to do
- Do not call the number or click buttons.
- Close the tab. If it will not close, end the browser from Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
- Reopen without restoring the previous session.
- Run a scan if you clicked anything or allowed notifications.
Real security software alerts come from the installed program on your PC, not from a web page.
